Bluebird Coffeeshop in Amsterdam
Bluebird has long been one of the more popular Amsterdam coffee shops, particularly on the eastern side of the Red Light District, away from the city centre proper. Popular with backpackers, the coffee shop is crowded on the weekends, so show up early or prepare to fight for a seat.
Atmosphere
The Bluebird coffee shop maintains the atmosphere of a busy city centre café most of the time, a product of both its popularity and proximity to a number of tourist hotspots in the eastern part of the city centre. Tall stools and counters provide space for clientele to sit and smoke, while the enclosed area for tobacco smokers features a few more comfortable couches – essential for an Amsterdam coffee shop. There is also a tiny terrace outside, but be warned that the staff will not allow anybody at this terrace to be seen rolling joints. The psychedelic décor and winding stairs hint back to Amsterdam’s heyday as a hippy haven; something that appeals to the crowds of young tourists that are always to be found here.
Bluebird’s coffee shop menu is definitely one of its primary draws. While not for the light of wallet, the range of strains on offer is sure to delight anybody that appreciates quality smoke. Prices range from EUR 12.50 per gram for regular strains, all the way up to EUR 50 for some top-shelf options. Vaporisers and other smoking accessories are available behind the bar.
Location
Bluebird can be found just around the corner from the Waterlooplein street market, on the street connecting it to Nieuwmarkt. To find Bluebird from Central Station, simply follow Damrak all the way to Dam Square and take a left along Damstraat; at the end of this street turn right and the blue-light sign proclaiming the name should be easily visible above what may well be the smallest smoking terrace of any Amsterdam coffee shop.
