De Graal Coffeeshop in Amsterdam
De Graal is a thinking man’s coffee shop. While chess boards are not unusual in Amsterdam coffee shops, here they are on every table. Most notably, De Graal also has a recording studio in the back for customers’ use.
Atmosphere
Coffeeshop De Graal is split over three levels. The ground floor contains the bar and some stools for those who like to perch, while the bottom floor, down a short flight of steps is filled with comfortable couches and armchairs for lounging over a game of chess or a conversation. The top floor also has large couches and tables for groups as well as nice big windows, refreshing in the usually gloomy Amsterdam coffee shops. The crowd is mostly locals and expats, making a nice change from the touristy city centre.
Inside
The major feature here, and one unique to this coffee shop, is the recording studios for those looking to make some music. Simply call to reserve a spot and the rooms, complete all the equipment you might need, are yours for EUR 5 per person per hour. The music played in the coffee shop itself is an eclectic mix; always staying on the chill side and staying clear of electronica. The coffee shop menu is quite varied, ranging from EUR 5 per gram, all the way to EUR 30, for some hard to find strains.
Location
De Graal is walking distance from the famous Albert Cuyp street market, making it a great place to stop in after browsing the stalls and shops nearby. To get to Albert Cuyp from Central Station, simply take trams 4,16, 24 or 25. This gem of an Amsterdam coffee shop is found in the lower numbers of Albert Cuyp Straat; look for the entrance covered in ivy.
