A part of Amsterdam's history since 1864, Die Port van Cleve has had a rich and varied life. The first Heineken brewery was located in the building until 1870, when G.A. Heineken moved to Stadhouderskade and the brewery that can be visited today. On 5th September 1870, the Hulscher brothers opened Die Port van Cleve as a beer house. Since then the establishment has evolved from beer house to restaurant and from restaurant to the costly but classic 4-star hotel it is today.
Location
Die Port van Cleve's location just behind the Royal Palace makes it a very good choice for those who wish to stay in a Dam Square hotel yet avoid the busier streets such as Damrak. Crossing from Centraal Station, walk down Martelaarsgracht, taking the left at the fork on to Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal. The hotel with its distinctive listed facade should be visible on the right hand side after a few minutes, just before the Magna Plaza shopping centre. Alternatively, from Dam Square simply walk behind the Royal Palace and turn right to find yourself almost at the door of the hotel.

Dining
The hotel's 'Brasserie De Poort’ seats up to 130 people and serves a breakfast buffet for EUR 17.50, as well as traditional Dutch and international meals throughout the day. The brasserie was opened in 1870 and since then has made its name serving its unique 'numbered steaks' - steaks that come with their own numbered certificate. Die Port van Cleve also boasts a bar / bodega, ‘De Blauwe Parade’ which is a good place to try some traditional Dutch jenever as well as regular drinks or a light meal while admiring the original Delft Blue Tile fresco. In addition, the hotel's Dam Square location means that the surrounding area boasts many restaurants and eateries.

Die Port van Cleve's 120 rooms are divided into 99 Superior rooms, 16 Executive rooms and 6 suites, including 2 bridal suites and the Presidential Suite.
