Bob’s Youth Hostel in Amsterdam
Bob’s Youth Hostel is just as chilled out and simple as its name suggests. A no frills place where backpackers and young travellers can get a taste of Amsterdam’s counter culture without having to empty their wallets as much as in many other Amsterdam hostels. Colourful murals line the walls, created by previous guests at the hostel, to reinforce the feel of a starving artist’s retreat that makes Bob’s so popular.
Location
Another great draw for Bob’s Youth Hostel is its central location. The lobby and reception can be found on Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal, the large street just behind the Royal Palace on Dam Square. Look for stone steps leading down into a haze of smoke. From this location many of Amsterdam’s most famous coffeeshops are a short stroll away, including Café 420, Abraxas and Grey Area. To get to Bob’s from Central Station, hop on trams 1,2,5,13 or 17.

Dining
Like many Amsterdam youth hostels, Bob’s does not have its own restaurant or dining area. Some snacks are available at the bar in reception, but for a proper meal, visitors will have to hit the streets. Luckily, the great location means that fast food joints, brown cafes serving Dutch snacks, and restaurants of every stripe can be found close by. Just step out the door and follow your nose.
Rooms
The accommodation at this Amsterdam youth hostel is simple, clean and cheap; so don’t expect a turn down service or a mint on your pillow. All rooms are dormitories, ranging in size from 4 to 20 beds, with no single or double rooms available. Most dorms are mixed, although there is one dorm set aside for girls only. Bathroom facilities are always shared, although smaller dorms can come with their own shower and washbasin.
Services
Bob’s Youth Hostel is known for its friendly staff and chilled out atmosphere, not its services. You will find no gym or business centre here. What you will find is a lobby that doubles as a communal smoking area and bar that stays open until 3am. There is a TV, board games and a communal book swap area for those looking to be entertained.
