National Holocaust Museum in Amsterdam

Because the Netherlands was a place of religious tolerance even during the historical times, many Jews immigrated here. Largely from Spain and Portugal during the 16th and 17th centuries. They were then emancipated during the 18th century in 1796 and made to be full citizens.

However the Nazi occupation during the Second World War was particularly brutal in the Netherlands and around 102 000 Jews were killed. Which was around three quarters of the country's Jewish population. This was the highest percetage of extermination in Western europe.

Before this happened, many lighter rules and bans were inacted during the occupation. The small steps by which the Jewish population was set apart before brutal removal. Termination of employment, forced registration, banishment from public life, no bicycle, no telephone, no savings, no home, no freedom of movement, and many more.

The National Holocaust Museum remembers these hard times. It was inaugurated in 2024 by the King of Netherlands and many dignitaries have attended. Including the President of Israel.
