Modern Times: Photography in the 20th Century,
Rijksmuseum, 1 November – 11 January

The Rijksmuseum, probably Amsterdam’s most famous and certainly its most royal museum, home to Dutch Masters’ classics such as Rembrandt’s Night Watch, has something a little different on offer this month. In 1994, the Rijksmuseum decided to begin collecting photos from later than the 19th Century. Now, with over 20,000 photographs in its collection, the museum has dedicated its Philips Wing to a breath-taking exhibition of photographs celebrating the 20th Century. The exhibition tracks the development of photography as both a tool and an art form throughout the course of the century; with everything from art photography to photojournalism on display. Vivian Maier: Street Photographer,
FOAM, 7 November – 28 January

Amsterdam’s FOAM photography museum presents a collection of photographs from New York photographer Vivian Maier, showcasing life in urban America from the 1950s to the 1980s. Maier’s photographic talent was not discovered until late in her life, having worked as a nanny to pay the bills during the time she was photographing. Luckily, she did not remain unknown and the insights into the American psyche that her works provide are now coming to Amsterdam. André Rieu– Ziggo Dome, 13 November

Everybody’s favourite classical Dutch violinist, André Rieu comes to Amsterdam’s Ziggo Dome this month for one night. Founder of the Maastricht Salon Orchestra and the Johann Strauss Orchestra, Rieu is perhaps the most recognisable name in Dutch music for many people. While he tours all over the world, there is something to be said for catching the master in his home country. The show is not for the light of wallet, with tickets starting at EUR 50 available from the official André Rieu website.

Terminal C – Badhuis Theatre, 15-16 November

This play, from Canadian-South African theatre company Now Now Productions, explores the human condition through the lens of two completely different characters trapped in a room together. When free spirit meets control freak, we get a revealing look into the prejudices and assumptions that make up our personalities, and how they can be rocked by a single event. Tamara Richards, a former member of Amsterdam's The InPlayers and founder of Now Now Productions, takes to the stage with co-star Annika Groeneveld. After a premiere in Montreal, the play is stopping at Amsterdam on its way to Capetown. Tickets cost EUR 12.50 and can be purchased via the venue website.

Spanish Riding School of Vienna,
Ziggo Dome, 29–30 November

A real treat for horse lovers, Dutch dressage champion Anky van Grunsven comes to Amsterdam’s Ziggo Dome to demonstrate the riding talents that have made her the world record holder for most Olympic medals won by an equestrian athlete, with three back-to-back gold medals for dressage. As the name suggests, the event focuses on Spanish riding techniques, some of which have been around for centuries. Tickets for the event begin from EUR 39 and can be purchased online via the Ziggo Dome website.
