Restaurant ‘Dubbel ’ in Amsterdam
Amsterdam is a busy city and it is smart to make a restaurant reservation in advance. You can do so through our main Amsterdam restaurants page.
Full name of this popular restaurant is ‘Dubbel – eten en drinken’ (“Double – eat and drink’). This is what the Dutch call ‘eetcafe’ – a café where you may have a drink but also get tasty simple meals. ‘Dubbel” is not very big, as most of Amsterdam restaurants, crowded and people come here for the atmosphere - to be with other people, to talk at the bar or to sit at the small table and observe others. The restaurant is a mixture between the student joint and a modern, simple restaurant.
The Food
The food at ‘Dubbel’ is Dutch – simple, fresh, well served. Over the past two decades, French cooking influenced local Amsterdam taste, but do not expect at ‘Dubbel’ any of the nouvelle cuisine follies. What we had were almost bistro meals. Turkish bread with garlic butter, a simple bowl of soup, a big pot of North Sea muscles and a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc. This has been all very good, even when not surprizing. We recommend ‘Dubbel’s fresh, tasty meals above some convoluted Chef’s inventions, because this food will just make you happy. Ice cream for a dessert and a very good coffee ended the meal.
The service
Fast and efficient service of young people, students in style, straightforward but smoothly reacting to all your requests.
The feel
If visiting Amsterdam, you would like to see how the locals spend time together, drink, eat and talk – this is your place. We also recommend ‘Dubbel’ for a simple quickly served bistro meal, especially if you attend one of the theaters in the area (let the service know, at what time your play will start). ‘Dubbel’ is also a fine place as for a low cost meeting of larger group of friends, when drinks are as important as food.
Prices
Prices at ‘Dubbel’ are moderate: soups are around €6, main courses are around €15.
